We Smythe March 20 and World Paper Money Auction to Feature the only known examples of Siam Banknotes
Manhattan, New York - March 13, 2008 -- RM Smythe & Company paper spring auction of money on 20 March 2008 will offer 890 lots of paper money in his Manhattan office. One of the more interesting lots of banknotes in the world samples of Siam banknotes, in particular 20, 80, and 100 Tical denominations, are believed to be the only examples we know exists. That a once resided in a museum in Paris, was bought by a trader of 15 years for $ 90,000, and recently were owned by the President of the Numismatic Association Thailand.
The spring sale will also include a wide selection of U.S. and World Notes, including U.S. From large to small, 50 and 100 Small size FRN's Collection, USA Small Size Errors, U.S. fractional currency, national banknotes, Colonial Currency, historical documents, De la Confederation of currencies and bonds, currencies obsolete Obsolete Sheets and various historical items. Lot # 234 - Banque de l'Indo-Chine. [Estimate $ 100,000 to $ 125,000] Decree of 21.1.1875 and 20.2.1888. Bangkok. 1) 19.12.1898. 5 days fine. P-S101. Part. The emerald green, with the date printed. Bullet in the left representing Eastern Bamboo Shoot woman sitting under "France" holding caduceus. Bank of France style numeration with serial number 000 and block number 0.0. Value in English and French. Faux magenta watermark of woman. Two engraved signatures. Text in Chinese and Siamese overprinted in black on back. Immaculate Condition. Uncirculated. 2) 5 days fine. Part. Similar to the first sample, but without date, zero numbers or false watermark in the front. Only one engraved signature. Overprint of Chinese and Siamese text absent from the back, but the Chinese text in the center is printed in emerald green the rest of the back. Uncirculated. 3) 6.12.1898. 20 days fine. P-S102. Brown with reclining Neptune holding trident at left. Back has overprint with black in Chinese and Siamese. Zero numbers overprinted on front in black along with the magenta false watermark. Two engraved signatures. Blank for a handwritten signature or register Le Caissierde l'Agence. Uncirculated. 4) 7.11.1898. 80 days fine. P-S103. Light blue with two elephants at left and right pillars, two reclining women with a tiger and a water buffalo in the bottom center. The overlay similar to the 20 Tical note, and signature block of l'Agence caissier blank. Out Circulation. 5) 31.2.1898. 100 days fine. P-S104. Basque red man Gama in the upper left of Polynesia with a dragon boat paddle on the right. The sailboats in the bottom center. Overlays similar to those of the past three lots and signature area of caissier de l'Agence blank. Uncirculated. [5]
With authorization from the Ministry of Colonies, the Bank of Indochina opened a branch bank in Bangkok on 22 February 1897. The printing of banknotes for use in Siam was first considered on 27 April 1897 and a series of four values (5, 20, 80 and 100 days penalty), approved the design of the first series of banknotes issued for Indochine but with texts and colors modified. Each value has a different design, and several dates.
Lot # 235 - Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. 18XX. 400 days fine. [Estimate $ 15,000 to $ 20,000] P-S127r2. Salmon and green front with China and Siam text overprinted in black. Royal arms at the top center. Red-orange back with Siamese overprinted in black text. Two vertical "VOID" perforations. Date December 1895 handwritten in black ink in the upper right. Highest denomination reported in the standard catalog. Extremely rare. Have a tip of the corner fold and some light glue remnants along a margin back. Election of the AU.
Lot # 247 - Thomas de la Rue. [Estimate $ 20,000 to $ 25,000] Presentation album with front and back design test issued a 1000 Baht note. The purple in the front of various colors is a portrait of King Rama IX at the left into Marshall Field's uniform that resembles the portrait in note 1 of 1953-56ND Baht issue. The right rear panel has a bullet embedded central activities around the major regional products Thailand: rubber, timber, fish and rice. There is evidence unadopted lower value notes whose backs each separately represent one of these activities. Uncirculated.
This album was once owned by the President of the Board of currencies and is believed to be unique. There is minor corner wear on the red album, some foxing lower in internal meetings, but essai tests themselves are shiny and smooth.
Lot # 298 - $ 10. Fr.95B.1863. No.5317. Choice Uncirculated. Note fresh [Estimate $ 12,500 to $ 15,000] A beautiful, the colors and the exceptional quality of paper. The only objection would signal little corner times in the upper right that extends only 1mm in the note. Perfectly centered in the back and moved slightly to the right on the front. Opportunities to acquire such high quality are becoming few and far between.
Lot # 523 - California Ch.12454. Los Angeles. Note the Pacific. $ 50. Fr.685. [Estimate $ 8,500 to 9500 U.S. dollars] 1902 PB. No. 7 B. Choice Uncirculated 63. One of the 15 single-digit 1902PBs recorded $ 50 T & P, which all grades about the same as this piece. They are very fast sellers, and supply not keeping up with demand. Printing and originality can be clearly seen through the PMG holder 63 EPQ.
Lot # 296 - $ 5. Fr.70. 1880. No.Z357532. Gem Uncirculated. [Estimate $ 8000 to $ 10,000] One of the best known large brown seal Fr-70 Notice legal. The relief and overall originality are clearly discernable through the CGC Gem65 holder. The PMG population report shows two 65 and one 66. A PMG63 sold last year for $ 9200. This beauty should bring at least that amount.
Lot # 596 - Continental Currency Counterfeit Detector. Law of 26 September 1778. Panel $ 5 - $ 7 - $ 8 - $ 20 - $ 40 - $ 50 - $ 60. $ 4000 to $ 8000] [Estimate of blue paper. Counterfeit detectors were printed using the current plates and distributed banks and traders to prevent fraud. The blue color was intended to stop the notes to be completed and distributed. Extremely rare in sheets. Three division edge small in the left margin, otherwise Uncirculated.
Lot # 301 - $ 100. Fr.204. 1863. EF-AU. [Estimate $ 6000 test to front Lovely $ 8000] of the $ 100 two-year interest Bearing Note with three coupons attached. Printed on heavy paper. Mural letter A. December 1, 1963. Three small hole cancellations through each signature on the note, and two each through Chittenden unique signature on the vouchers. The paper has all sharp corners with two vertical folds, one for the center and one along the border with the coupons. Only two examples are known cast, and though not so rare, the evidence is very limited .. The proof of dishes D in VF condition sold earlier this year for $ 6900.
