The Nikkor 10.5 Fisheye Lens: What You Need To Know

If your a Nikon owner and your looking for a lens that allows you to create dramatic images with a different perspective then consider the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye lens.

Ever since it was first released in July, 2003, the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye lens has been a big hit with Nikon photographers who like to shoot with wide angle lenses. Although you can use this lens with Nikons FX cameras, this particular Nikkor fisheye lens was designed for Nikons DX cameras with the 1.5x crop.

Except when it's completely wide open, the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye produces sharp images with exceptional color reproduction and contrast; everything Nikon photographers have come to expect over the years.

Auto Focus is right on the money with this lens but you need a Nikon that has a built-in auto focus motor. Since the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye doesn't have AF built-in, those who own the D40/D40x, D60, D7000 or D5000 will have to settle for manual focus. This isn't a concern to many Nikon shooters because this lens is in focus most of the time because of the Nikkor 10.5mm's extreme Depth of Field. Set at between f/8 and f/11 it's hards to get a shot that isn't in focus.

The Nikkor 10.5 fisheye is excellent for taking photographs in low light conditions because of its fast f/2.8 maximum aperture. If you have a steady hand, you can easily take hand held images at 1/10th of a second. An awesome lens for photographers who really like shooting in low light conditions without having to use a tripod.

With the Nikkors CRC (Close Range Correction) focusing technology you can move in very close with the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye. The Close Focus Range on this Nikon lens is 5 and a half inches from the rear of the focal plane. Since objects always seem further away than they actually are with a fisheye lens you need to be very mindful not to slam the lens into whatever your shooting and scratch the lens! Because there are no screw type threads on a fisheye lens - the extreme convexity of the lens prohibits this - you can't use a protective filter on this lens. You should always have the lens cap on this lens when not in use.

The Nikkor f/2.8 fisheye is a very compact and light-weight lens; although small, the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye is Nikon tough. Weighing in at 10.7 ounces and measuring only 2.5" in length and 2.5" in diameter this lens can easily be stuffed into a jacket pocket and you'd hardly notice it was there.

For individuals who need to use filters, the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye accepts rear gel filters.

Overall, the Nikkor 10.5 fisheye lens is a winner and you won't be disappointed with this lens unless having Auto Focus is something you just need to have. This is the perfect lens for creating dramatic images in close quarters.
