What is the best prosumer dslr under $900 for low-light (in auditoriums) and scenery?
I previously used a Pentax PZ20 SLR and also a Canon G3 point-and-shoot. I have a couple of inexpensive lenses for the Pentax (FA-80 kit lens & a tamron 70-300). I would rather not have my selection dictated by these lenses, if I can find a better overall camera for the type of photography I have in mind.
Checked dpreviews.com where Canon seems to have lower noise but Nikon seems to have better color saturation. Which one of these would be easier to deal with (higher noise or lower color saturation) using software (Photoshop or Paintshop Pro etc.)?
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks..
The current issue of Popular Photography Mag did a review of the best cameras under $900. There is no Prosumer under that range btw... If you want Prosumer it will be a little more.
But the Canon XSI won hands down. And the noise on the nikon is a LOT worse than the canon. And the color saturation is better on the nikons when using standard lenses and shooting at iso 200 (not all nikons shoot at 100), but the Canon has very good color. IF using the higher grade lenses, the Canon is as good or better than the nikon.
If you want prosumer, get the Canon 40D. Its a great camera. I had one and enjoyed it as my backup until I sold it to help pay off my new 1ds.
And with teh Canon you can shoot 1600 all day long indoors and no prob. even 3200 if needed and photoshop cs3 in works it well, esp when shot in RAW or use DXO. It has a wonderful noise filter in it!!! Figure the Canon will be 2-3 stops lower in noise/grain over the nikons, and that is HUGE when shooting lower light esp if you are selling or enlarging your work. I have many I have done at 1600 and blown to 16x20 with no problems. I think I have some on my website even. I know I have several examples of 800, & 1200 iso on it.
